Norway's
Fjords Road Trip
A week through western Norway: Bergen, the Sognefjord and Flåm, Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen hairpins, Ålesund and the Atlantic Ocean Road. Roughly 800 km with several ferries, best from late spring to early autumn.
Bergen and the inner fjords
Start in Bergen, a harbour city ringed by mountains, and head inland to the Sognefjord region. Flåm sits at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, with a scenic railway that climbs the mountain behind the village.
Roads in the fjord country often involve ferries and long tunnels. Check ferry timetables, which can be infrequent outside the summer season.
Plan around the ferries
Several crossings on this route are ferries. Look up the timetable ahead of time so you do not lose hours waiting, and expect queues in July.
Geiranger and Trollstigen
Geirangerfjord is a narrow, steep-sided fjord with waterfalls dropping straight into it. Nearby, Trollstigen climbs a mountainside in eleven hairpin bends; the road is closed in winter and usually opens in late spring, so check the road authority's page before you go.
Ålesund and the Atlantic Road
Ålesund is known for its Art Nouveau buildings, rebuilt after a fire in 1904. Further north, the Atlantic Ocean Road near Kristiansund strings short bridges between small islands and is at its most dramatic in stormy weather.
Trollstigen
Eleven hairpins up a mountain wall, open in summer only.
Fresh fish and brown cheese
Seafood and local cheese in small harbour towns.
Fjord-side cabins
Rent a simple cabin on the water for a night.
